Why West Ashley

Older houses, outdoor rooms.

Many West Ashley streets are lined with ranch and mid-century houses: one story, low rooflines, wide lots, and a backyard that gets used. A lot of them already have a screened porch, often an older one with torn or sagging panels. Newer neighborhoods tend to have a covered patio and a deck off the back.

The problems are the same either way. The late sun comes in low. The screens are missing or tired. And near the Ashley River marsh and the tidal creeks, the bugs come out at dusk.

If your deck or patio faces west, you know the pattern. It is fine at noon under the eave, then too hot to use from mid-afternoon until the sun drops behind the trees.

What to check before you order.

West Ashley is split between the City of Charleston and unincorporated Charleston County. Your address decides who issues the building permit for a rated shutter install. ShadeCoast handles that paperwork either way.

Some neighborhoods, especially newer subdivisions, have an HOA that reviews exterior changes like awning color. Older neighborhoods vary. Check your covenants before you order, and we will supply the product details and colors for the application.

Some low-lying parts of West Ashley flood in heavy rain. On a motorized screen or roll-down shutter the motor sits in the housing at the top of the opening, not at the floor. At the estimate we also look at where switches and wiring run, and keep them up off the slab.
