How BAR review works for shutters. In the City of Charleston’s historic districts, the Board of Architectural Review looks at exterior changes that can be seen from the street. Depending on scope, an application may be handled by staff or go before the full board. Expect questions about material, louver size and proportion, color, hinges, and shutter dogs, and how all of it suits the age and style of the house. Bring samples, not just a brochure.
Build review time into the schedule. Get BAR approval before anything is ordered, and start well ahead of hurricane season. Rated installs usually need a building permit as well; that is a separate step, and we handle it once the design is approved.
Size them to close. A traditional pair is sized so the two leaves cover the whole opening when shut. That is what makes a colonial look right, and it is the only way a rated colonial can protect the glass.
Old walls take care. Brick, stucco, and old wood trim on a single house need the right anchors and hinge placement for the tested assembly. We check every opening at the measure.
Outside the city. Other towns and many neighborhoods run their own design review, so we confirm who needs to sign off before we draw anything.

Do I need BAR approval for colonial shutters in downtown Charleston?
If the house is in one of the City of Charleston’s historic districts and the shutters are visible from the street, generally yes. The Board of Architectural Review, or its staff for smaller projects, approves the design before work starts. We supply drawings and samples for the application.
Will the Board of Architectural Review approve aluminum shutters?
The board decides each application on its own merits, looking at material, profile, proportions, color, and hardware in the context of the building. Our colonials are built with traditional louver proportions and authentic hardware, and we bring real samples to the submittal, but approval is the board’s decision.
Do I need a building permit for colonial hurricane shutters?
Rated installs usually need one from the City of Charleston, the town, or Charleston County, depending on the address. It is separate from BAR or HOA approval, which comes first. ShadeCoast handles the permit paperwork.
