You press a button, tap an app, or let a schedule do it, and the shade stops exactly where you want it. Group the shades in a room and they move together, so a living room with six windows opens in one motion instead of six trips around the furniture.

Motorization is not a separate product line. It is an option on most of the shades we sell, so you pick the fabric, opacity, and style that suit the room first and then decide which windows should have a motor. The rooms where we recommend motorization most often on in-home consultations around the metro area.

• Tall peninsula windows — the tall windows in older downtown homes put the top of a shade well out of reach. A motor raises and lowers them from a remote, so they actually get used through the day instead of staying in one position all year.
• Great rooms and stairwells — high glass in newer Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, and Summerville homes, and windows over a staircase, are awkward or unsafe to reach by hand. These are the windows where motorization pays off first.
• Water-view glare — low sun off the harbor, the marsh, or a river moves across a room through the afternoon. Solar roller fabrics and sheer shadings cut the glare while you keep the view, and a motor lets you adjust them as the light changes without getting up.
• West sun — late-day summer sun heats a west-facing room fast. A schedule can lower solar or honeycomb shades ahead of the hot afternoon and raise them again in the evening, so the room stays comfortable when nobody is home.
