- Downtown & King Street — traditional fabric awnings over storefronts and piazza openings suit the historic district. We work within Board of Architectural Review guidelines on facades that are visible from the street.
- Mount Pleasant & Daniel Island — motorized retractables over decks and outdoor kitchens, in HOA-approved colors, are the most requested awning we install here.
- Folly, IOP & Sullivan’s — beach houses get a lot of wind. We recommend retractables with wind sensors that stow the awning automatically, and fixed frames engineered for the exposure.

How much does an awning cost in Charleston?
Cost depends on span, projection, frame type, and whether the awning is motorized. A small stationary window awning sits at the low end; a wide motorized retractable over a deck sits at the high end. Every ShadeCoast quote follows a free at-home measure, so the number you get is for your opening, not an average.
What is the difference between a retractable, fabric, and stationary awning?
A retractable awning rolls away when you want sky and extends when you want shade, manually or by motor. A fabric awning is a custom-sewn cover on a fixed frame. A stationary awning is a permanent fixed-frame structure over a door, window, or entryway. All three are built in the same Sunbrella fabric range.
Can an awning survive coastal wind and salt air?
Yes, when it is specified for the coast. ShadeCoast uses marine-grade fabrics and corrosion-resistant hardware, and retractable awnings should be retracted in high wind. Fixed-frame awnings are engineered to the wind load for the site.

Do I need approval to add an awning in downtown Charleston?
Often, yes. In the peninsula’s historic district, exterior changes visible from the public right of way generally go through the City of Charleston Board of Architectural Review. ShadeCoast provides drawings, fabric samples, and specifications for the submittal and builds to what is approved.
Which awning works best on a Charleston piazza or porch?
A piazza already has a roof, so the problem is usually sun coming in low from the side, not from overhead. For that, a rolling shade curtain between the columns does more than an awning. Fabric awnings earn their place over the windows and doors that face the sun, and retractables suit open decks and patios with no roof at all.
Does my HOA have to approve an awning in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, or Kiawah?
Often, yes. Many planned and island communities around Charleston, including Daniel Island, I’On, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island, have architectural review boards that approve exterior changes, and fabric color and frame finish are usually part of that review. Check your covenants before ordering. ShadeCoast provides drawings, fabric swatches, and specifications for the application.
What should I do with my awning when a hurricane is coming?
Retract a retractable awning and leave it closed until the storm has passed. On fixed-frame awnings, ask at the estimate about fabric that can be taken off ahead of a hurricane warning so the frame stands on its own. Either way, deal with it well before the wind arrives, not during it.
How do I care for an awning in Lowcountry humidity and pollen?
Hose it off a few times a season to keep salt and pollen from building up, and let the fabric dry before leaving a retractable rolled up for a long stretch. Solution-dyed acrylic resists mildew, but dirt left on the surface still holds moisture. Retract it in high wind and before storms.
