We sew from solution-dyed acrylic that resists fading and mildew in Lowcountry humidity, use UV-stable thread, and build frames from powder-coated aluminum with stainless fasteners, so the awning over a Mount Pleasant doorway or a downtown cafe stays sharp for years.

Style 01

Shed

The classic "shed roof" awning is the most popular choice in a welded frame. Shed roofs can span a single small window or an entire storefront, even wrapping around the corner. Beyond shade, this versatile style can also act as signage for your business — lettering and graphics can be placed on the valance, sides, and body of the awning.

Style 02

Convex

With a distinctly different shape that sets it apart from other awnings, the convex is often chosen for commercial applications. Its framework is conducive to turning corners, making it ideal to shade storefront windows as well as the sidewalk.

Style 03

Curved

Here's a style that yields subtle flair for any residence or shop. Similar in shape to our shed awning, the curved frame is gently rounded at top and bottom. This style is an ideal way to accentuate a single-door entry.

Style 04

Dome

Dome awnings provide a stylish elegance to your entryway. While the quarter-sphere is most often seen, domes can be elongated — stretched, if you will — until they become essentially a convex with domed, rather than flat, side panels.

Style 05

Marquee

Popular for entrances, the marquee is an excellent choice for restaurants, hotels, condominiums, and health-care facilities. The front face of a marquee lends itself naturally to the placement of graphics — consider your street number, business name, or logo.

  • Salt air & humidity — near the harbor and on the islands, the frame and fasteners matter as much as the cloth. We build on powder-coated aluminum with stainless fasteners, and a rinse with the hose a few times a season keeps salt and pollen out of the weave.

On a historic-district facade, we start with the simplest awning that does the job: a shed profile in a solid or classic stripe, sized to the opening it shades rather than the whole wall. It fits the building and is easy to explain in a review submittal. Send us photos of the building and any guidance the city has given you, and we will draw the awning to match. Away from the historic districts, in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, or Summerville, dome, curved, and marquee profiles are all on the table.

What Lowcountry homeowners ask us most.

Do fabric awnings in downtown Charleston need Board of Architectural Review approval?

Often, yes. In the peninsula’s historic districts, exterior changes visible from the public right of way generally go through the City of Charleston Board of Architectural Review, and that can include an awning’s shape, projection, color, and signage. ShadeCoast provides drawings, fabric samples, and specifications for the submittal and builds to what is approved.

Can you re-cover an existing awning frame?

Yes. If the frame is sound, we keep it and replace the fabric, including on awnings we did not build. We check the frame and fasteners first, since salt air near the harbor and on the islands can work on older hardware.

Which fabric awning style suits a Charleston home?

For windows and doorways on older homes, traditional shed and curved profiles in a solid or stripe are the usual choice. A dome suits a single front door. Marquee and convex styles are more at home on storefronts, restaurants, and condominiums. We bring swatches to the house so you can see the fabric against your own facade.

How long does awning fabric last on the coast?

Our awning fabric is solution-dyed acrylic with a 10-year fabric warranty. How long it looks new depends on exposure: an awning facing south or west near the water works harder than one in the shade inland. Regular rinsing and a re-cover when the time comes keep the frame in service.
