Most Daniel Island homes were built for living outside. There are front porches on the street side, screened or open porches at the back, courtyards, and second-floor lanais. Many lots back up to a park, a creek, the golf course, or the marsh. That is the draw. It is also why those spaces take so much sun and see so many bugs.
River and marsh frontage means open exposure. On a lot of rear porches there is not much tree cover between you and the afternoon sun. When the air goes still at dusk, the no-see-ums find the porch. A fixed screen solves the bugs but closes in the view for good. A retractable system handles both, then rolls away when you do not need it.

Daniel Island is a planned community, and exterior changes go through the Daniel Island Property Owners Association's architectural review. An awning, a screen housing, a shutter, or a pergola cover is a visible change. Expect the review to look at color, placement, and how the product sits on the house.

Some neighborhoods and condo buildings on the island have their own rules on top of that, so check yours early.

Yes. The housing above each opening is what a review board looks at, so we color-match it to the trim. When the screen is up, the fabric is out of sight.
