The Family Beach

Motorized screens in Surfside Beach.

Surfside Beach is a town of raised beach houses, deep covered porches, and second-row cottages a block off the ocean — which is exactly the kind of building that a motorized screen transforms. Shade Coast builds and installs retractable patio screens, custom awnings, and hurricane shutters for Surfside Beach and North Surfside Beach, working out of the showroom just up the road on George Bishop Parkway.

Why Surfside Beach

Screens make sense on a Surfside porch.

The classic Surfside Beach house is raised, with a covered porch running the width of the front elevation. It is the best room in the house for about six weeks a year — and then the sun moves, the no-see-ums arrive off the marsh, and a summer squall blows rain straight through it. A motorized retractable screen fixes all three without walling the porch in.

Drop the screen and the porch becomes a shaded, bug-free room with the ocean breeze still moving through it. Retract it and the porch is exactly as open as the day it was built. Nothing is bolted across the view, and there is no frame left standing when the screen is up.

  • Motorized patio & porch screens — shade, insect, and storm-rated mesh that rolls down at the touch of a button and disappears when it is up.
  • Retractable deck screens — for the upper deck, where wind and low sun are worst.
  • Hurricane shutters — Bahama, accordion, roll-down, and panels — rated protection for a town this close to the water.
  • Custom awnings — retractable and fabric awnings sized for beach-house elevations and sewn in our own shop.

Common questions

Surfside Beach
questions.

What homeowners here ask us most.

Do you install motorized retractable screens in Surfside Beach?

Yes. Motorized retractable patio and porch screens are the most common install we do in Surfside Beach and North Surfside Beach. Shade Coast measures at your home, shows mesh samples against your own light, and quotes the opening at no cost.

Will a motorized screen keep no-see-ums off a Surfside porch?

With the right mesh, yes. Standard insect mesh stops mosquitoes but not the smaller biting midges that come off the marsh at dusk. For Surfside Beach porches we usually recommend the tighter no-see-um mesh.

Can screens go on a second-story deck?

Yes. Retractable deck screens are a common Surfside install, and the upper deck is often where they earn their keep most — that is where the wind and the low afternoon sun are worst.

What about hurricane protection in Surfside Beach?

Surfside Beach sits directly on the Atlantic, and we install the full range of rated protection: accordion shutters, motorized roll-downs, Bahama shutters, Colonial shutters, storm panels, and hurricane-rated screens. Which one suits depends on the opening and how quickly you need it closed.

Do you serve North Surfside Beach as well?

Yes — North Surfside Beach, Surfside Beach proper, Garden City Beach, and the neighborhoods between Surfside and Myrtle Beach State Park are all on our regular route.
